This special issue will focus on the study and theorising the work and experience of all mathematics teacher educators (MTE) including those who work as Early Childhood Educators. This domain of mathematics education literature is developing as scholars create approaches that account for and describe diversity in mathematics teacher educator knowledge, context, and practices. Existing reports of MTE knowledge and practices have identified ways of operating associated with different demographic groups of MTEs, developed theories of MTE knowledge, and described MTE practices. In this special issue we build from discussions of the ICME-15 (2024) TSG 4.8 Knowledge and practices of mathematics teacher educators and envisage that papers may address but are not limited to the following:
- How is theory developed specific to the work of MTEs?
- How are methodologies used, adapted, or developed for the study of MTE work?
- What is the role of context and experience in MTE practice?
- What is distinctive about MTEs relative to teacher education, and how MTEs teach with curricular materials?
- How do MTEs connect research to MTE teaching?
- How do MTEs connect tertiary mathematics to primary or secondary mathematics?
- How do MTE connect their teaching practices with those prospective teachers will use in their teaching practices?
